Overview

What is Chub AI?

Chub AI is a web platform for creating, sharing, and talking to custom AI characters. It does not run its own core chatbot. Instead it works as a hub that connects community-made "character cards" to external language models. Users can browse a large library of ready-made characters, build their own with detailed personalities and backstories, and hold long roleplay or storytelling conversations. The platform grew out of the 2024 merger of CharacterHub, a character repository, and Venus AI, a chat interface. To power chats, people either subscribe to Chub's hosted models or connect their own API key from providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter. Tools such as Lorebooks help characters stay consistent across long sessions. The service is aimed at adults and allows fewer content restrictions than most mainstream chat apps.

The verdict

Pros & cons

Pros

The bring-your-own-key setup lets me run almost any model, including GPT-4 and Claude, and swap them mid-story.

Lorebooks keep characters and world details consistent across long, multi-session roleplays.

Content rules are looser than Character.AI, so mature themes aren't blocked mid-chat.

The community library means I can start chatting without building anything from scratch.

Cards export cleanly to SillyTavern and other frontends, so I'm not locked in.

Cons

Setup is hard for newcomers; API keys, presets, and memory settings take real effort to learn.

Servers go down or slow under load fairly often.

Card payments usually fail, pushing me toward cryptocurrency, and paid plans bill in four-month blocks with no refunds.

Character quality is inconsistent because everything is community-made.

The native Soji model still slips in reasoning and consistency during long, complex chats
