What is JanitorAI?

Janitor AI is a web and mobile platform for chatting with AI characters and building your own. It is aimed at people who want interactive fiction, roleplay, or ongoing conversation with a fictional persona without having to set up a chatbot themselves.Chats run on Janitor's own model (JLLM) by default, but users can connect an outside model through a proxy or API key, or through the paid janitor+ Router. Pros

The character library is far larger than any competitor's, so nearly every genre or scenario already has several characters to try.

The free tier has no daily message cap, which is rare in this category.

Connecting a stronger model through an API key or the Router sharply improves output; characters stay in role and follow long prompts.

Character building goes deeper than rivals, with lorebooks, Scripts, and full CSS control over the bot page.

Moderation is more permissive than Character.AI, so mature and dark themes are allowed under the Limitless tag.

Cons

The default JLLM model repeats itself, speaks for the user, and drifts off the scenario within a dozen or so messages.

Outages and "failed to fetch" errors happen often enough to interrupt longer sessions.

Proxy and API-key setup confuses first-time users, and errors from third-party providers are hard to diagnose.

There is no native voice or image generation.
